The Inspiration

Thales was a pre-Socratic philosopher, noted to be one of the first in Greek tradition to associate natural phenomenon with scientific rationale, rather than mythological forces. He is credited with development of pre-Pathagorean applications within geometry - solving spatial calculations such as pyramid heights and ship distances. His approach to understanding natural matter and planetary phenomenon is cited as the genesis of physiology and astronomy in the Western tradition. Having observed the ability to move feathers with amber ("elektron" in Greek), Thales is also credited with some of the earliest conceptual writings on the subject of electricity. As a scientist who recognized arbitrage opportunities inherent within natural patterns, Thales is believed to have structured and exercised one of the first options contracts in recorded history. Utilizing historical correlation between weather patterns and harvest yields, it's believed that Thales secured forward rights to lease olive presses en masse ahead of a particularly robust season - subsequently monetizing excess demand for the presses upon a bountiful harvest. Thales is also credited with utilizing his predictive reasoning to effect positive social outcomes. Historical accounts suggest that his calculated 'prediction' of the solar eclipse of 585 BC contributed to a truce between warring parties - primarily by reinforcing principals of scientific reasoning, human self-determinism, and personal accountability. If around today, we imagine Thales would likely enjoy similar pursuits of transforming market trends into accretive opportunities.
